What I Wish I’d Known: First-Year Dancer Edition

Hi, my name is Hannah Lahr and I am on the Media Committee for Dance Marathon. As we all start fundraising for the kiddos, I would like to express how excited I am for my second year of Dance Marathon here at UNI! Every new year of Dance Marathon brings about new challenges. Today I wanted to write to all of you some valuable information as I have been reflecting on my past year in DM. Here is what I wish I would have known: first-year dancer edition.

  1. Attend the all-dance workshops! They are a chance to meet new people and make friends. There are always great tips shared to new participants about how to fundraise. Normally, there’s some sort of drawing or chance to win some money for your donor drive just for coming and participating. This year’s first workshop will be over zoom on Wednesday, October 14th from 6:30-7:30. Even though it is over zoom, it is still crucial to come because you will learn all about upcoming events and fundraising tips.

  2. Ask questions! As a new dancer, it can be overwhelming. Knowing where to start with fundraising is difficult. I recommend becoming friends with your morale captain. They have great tips on how to fundraise and they can answer any questions you may have about the Big Event.

  3. Think of a fun way to fundraise! For example, some dancers had donors sponsor an inch of their hair to cut. Others made a gross smoothie to drink for donations. You could always make something and sell it to make money for your donor drive. There are tons of ways to make fundraising fun!

  4. The Big Event is one of the most rewarding things you will ever be a part of in college! Even though the Big Event may seem very far away, it will be here before you know it. I was very nervous for my big event because I did not know what to expect, but I have never felt more proud of my team and my fellow dancers for all the work they put in for the kiddos. Look forward to the Big Event, and get excited NOW!

Now that it is my second year of Dance Marathon, I know what to expect and how to fundraise effectively. But, I am always learning new things and meeting new people. Dance Marathon will give you the opportunity to make memories that will last a lifetime.

I look forward to seeing you Wednesday, October 14th over zoom starting at 6:30pm. It's going to be epic!
